This Privacy Policy explains how GuardVio ("we," "us," "our," or "the Extension") collects, uses, stores, shares, and protects information when you use our Chrome browser extension, GuardVio: Adult Content Blocker ("the Service").

By installing or using GuardVio, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not install or use the Extension.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the information necessary to provide content-filtering, protection, and progress-tracking features. Depending on the features you use, we may collect the following categories of data:

1.1 Account Information (via Google Sign-In)

If you choose to sign in with Google, we collect, through the OAuth2 permissions you grant:

  • Your email address
  • Your basic Google profile information (name, profile picture)

We use this information solely to create and authenticate your GuardVio account, sync your settings across devices (if applicable), and provide customer support.

1.2 Browsing and Navigation Data

To provide content blocking and filtering, the Extension:

  • Reads the URL and domain of the active tab you are viewing (activeTab permission)
  • Monitors web navigation events (webNavigation permission) to detect when a page matches our blocklist categories
  • Applies blocking rules to restricted content using Chrome's declarativeNetRequest API

Important: URL/domain data used for real-time blocking decisions is processed locally on your device using on-device rules wherever possible. We do not transmit your full browsing history to our servers.

1.3 Usage and Progress Data

We collect data related to your use of the Extension's protection and progress-tracking features, such as:

  • Number of sites blocked
  • Protection status (on/off) and toggle history
  • Streak/progress statistics
  • Feature usage (e.g., dashboard visits, settings changes)

1.4 Device and Technical Information

We may collect limited technical information, including:

  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Extension version
  • Idle/active status of the browser (idle permission), used to pause tracking or trigger reminders appropriately

1.5 Notifications

We use the notifications and alarms permissions to send you reminders, alerts, and protection status updates. These are generated based on data already described above and are not shared with third parties.

1.6 Payment Information (Premium Features)

If you purchase a premium subscription, payment is processed by a third-party payment processor (e.g., Stripe, Google Pay, or Chrome Web Store Payments). We do not collect or store your full payment card details. The payment processor's own privacy policy governs the handling of your payment data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information collected to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the content-blocking and filtering functionality
  • Authenticate your account and sync settings across your devices
  • Track and display your protection progress and statistics
  • Send notifications, reminders, and status alerts you have enabled
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and improve Extension performance
  • Provide customer support
  • Enforce our Terms of Service and prevent abuse or circumvention of blocking features
  • Process premium subscription purchases and manage billing
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your browsing data to serve targeted advertising.

3. How We Store and Secure Your Data

  • Local Storage: Most settings, block lists, and progress data are stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage API and are not transmitted to our servers unless explicitly stated in Section 1.
  • Cloud Storage (if applicable): If you sign in with Google to enable cross-device sync, account-linked data (e.g., settings, progress) is stored on secure cloud servers.
  • Security Measures: We use industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and access controls, to protect your data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
  • Retention: We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You may request deletion of your data at any time (see Section 6).

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share limited information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service Providers: With trusted third-party vendors who help us operate the Service (e.g., cloud hosting, payment processing, crash/error reporting), under contractual obligations to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we specify.
  • Legal Requirements: If required to do so by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of GuardVio, our users, or others.
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case we will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your data.
  • With Your Consent: For any other purpose disclosed to you at the time we collect the information, with your consent.

We do not share your browsing history or blocked-site data with advertisers or data brokers.

5. Permissions Justification

Chrome extension permissions used by GuardVio and why they are required:

  • storage — Save your settings, block lists, and progress locally
  • activeTab — Read the current tab's URL to check against blocking rules
  • webNavigation — Detect page navigation events to enforce blocking in real time
  • declarativeNetRequest — Block access to restricted domains/content
  • alarms — Schedule periodic checks, reminders, and protection resets
  • notifications — Alert you to blocked content or protection status changes
  • identity — Enable secure Google Sign-In for account and sync features
  • idle — Detect device idle state to pause/resume tracking accurately
  • host_permissions (<all_urls>) — Apply content filtering across all websites you visit

6. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Export your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent (e.g., disconnect Google Sign-In) at any time
  • Object to or restrict certain processing

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at guardvio01@gmail.com. You can also uninstall the Extension at any time, which will remove all locally stored data from your browser. Cloud-stored account data (if any) can be deleted by contacting us.

7. Children's Privacy

GuardVio is intended to help adults and guardians manage content filtering, including for use on family or minors' devices under parental supervision. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 (or the relevant age of digital consent in your jurisdiction) without parental involvement. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data without appropriate consent, please contact us so we can remove it.

8. International Users

If you access GuardVio from outside India, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries with different data protection laws than your own. By using the Service, you consent to such transfer, subject to appropriate safeguards.

9. Data Breach Notification

In the event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify affected users and relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date above and, where appropriate, through an in-extension notice or email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
